Pilates is a form of exercise that was developed by a person called Joseph Pilates. These exercises emphasize balanced development through core strength, awareness, flexibility and graceful yet efficient movement. Several people have started practicing Pilates and there are several other people who are interested in practicing.

This method works well for a huge range of people right from children to senior children. Athletes and dancers love to practice it, senior citizens and expecting mothers prefer it as an easy and effective method to mitigate back pain. The major advantage about Pilates is that it makes a person stronger, leaner, longer and graceful.

Pilates exercises require a lot of modification. All the exercises have been developed as a result of numerous modifications. These modifications make a workout safe as well as challenging for any person. Strengthening the core of a person is the principal aim of Pilates. It creates longer and leaner muscles with a flatter abs. As the core muscles gain more and more strength, the superficial muscles in the trunk region support movement and the spine. The entire torso experiences a lot of stability as the power of the core region increases. A stabilized trunk relieves pressure that is exerted on the back allowing the body to move efficiently and freely.

There are six basic principles that are to be followed while trying out the Pilates exercises. They are Centering, Flow, Control, Breath, Concentration and Precision. These are the most essential ingredients that are present in any Pilates workout. The Pilates exercises always emphasize quality than quantity. Pilates exercises do not require repetition for any step. These exercises yield results in a very short duration of time. The Pilates method does not any extensive equipment or a lot of time. All it requires is a bit of concentration.

Pilates exercises can be done either on the floor or the mat. This was developed by the Joseph Pilates, the same person who invented the entire process that is today famous as the Pilates exercises. Among all the equipments that are used for Pilates exercises, the Pilates reformer is probably the most effective and well known. There are at present several studios that propagate the various methods that were taught and tried by Joseph Pilates. It was originally a method to rehabilitate the prisoners of war who were injured. The work of this man was kept alive by a group of students who were devoted to Joseph Pilates. The results of all those efforts are what a major portion of the world is enjoying at this juncture of time.
